Tedra Osell teaches writing at Ventura College, does some freelance writing, volunteers at her son’s school four days a week, and sleeps when she can. She was an assistant professor at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada from 2002-2005 after earning her PhD in English from the University of Washington in 2002. I urge you to show a bit more flexibility in your advice on the career/family bit. If the goal is a faculty position in the sciences, there is usually an interim postdoctoral stage.
