  • Modest Proposal #1 -- Ban the bulb

    By G. Rendell April 7, 2008 2:29 pm

'Tis Spring, and an old(er) man's fancy turns to thoughts of ... possible policy changes for the coming academic year.

First in line, Greenback U should totally ban the use of incandescent bulbs on campus. It's just a first step, and a small one, but it can have significant effect in both residence halls and (to a lesser extent) office buildings. We've banned halogen bulbs in residence halls for years. How hard can this be? And why ever wouldn't we?

Has your school already done this?

  • High-Efficiency Bulbs on Campus

  • At my institution, we are slowly transitioning to high-efficiency light bulbs (at least in the residence halls). In my particular residence hall we have a supply of bulbs to replace any burned out bulbs between now and the end of the academic year at which time the staff will change all bulbs in student residences (or so I've been told). In my own on-campus apartment, I used some of my hard earned graduate stipend to purchase high-efficiency bulbs for all the lamps in my apartment which I intend to leave behind for the future adviser. Yes, the bulbs are more expensive, but it's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.
