  • ABC's and PhD's: Creating Programs for Local Elementary Schools

Non-traditional academics have many skills different from the general population of "parent volunteers" at an elementary school. This provides a unique opportunity for schools to benefit from well-educated parents who have the time and inclination to create programs that supplement school curricula. Here I describe the Science FUN Fridays that I created to motivate and excite the children about science. My efforts paid off: our participation in the biennial Science Fair went up five-fold following our off-year Science FUN days. And judging by the kids faces at the end of each of our Science FUN days, science can be as much fun as recess!

  • It's funny you mention that. When we were applying to a private school over the winter, one of the admissions people asked what I did. When I told them I worked at a local uni in science they lit up and said, "Science fair!" Of course we didn't get in, so it's their loss. ;-)
