According to this blurb in IHE, Career Education Corp is shutting down nine of its campuses, all in the Northeast. McIntosh College, Lehigh Valley College, and a bunch of Gibbs and Katharine Gibbs campuses will 'teach out,' closing in 2009. As a veteran of a proprietary college in the Northeast, this really struck me.

Let's consider two recent, related pieces in the University of Miami newspaper. The first announces the appearance, in selected classrooms, of a new technology called SYNCHRONEYES. Synchroneyes is the sort of thing universities all over the country are spending your tuition dollars on.

It’s funny, how sometimes the best way to understand big issues in big, complex, institutional contexts is to solve little problems in little, simple, personal contexts. A case in point ... Last Friday, a terrible thing happened in my house. I put coffee in the filter, put the filter in the basket, added water, hit the button and nothing happened! (If you want to take a moment to recover from the sheer horror of that situation, it’s OK. I’ll wait for you. Just say when.)

I was watching the BBC yesterday afternoon when they cut in with breaking news of the shootings at Northern Illinois University. In addition to the feeling we all know so well now--shit, it's happening again--many memories came back, since my BA is from Northern. My thoughts are with you and your families.

A regular reader writes: A probationary faculty member in my college plagiarized his entire statement of teaching philosophy in his RST (Rank, Salary, and Tenure) file. Not just lifted a few phrases, but downloaded someone else's teaching philosophy from the Internet, omitted a few paragraphs that were too specifically about the actual author, and put it in his file.

Evidence of UD's still-throbbing 'sixties sensibility. A list that will be added to as UD thinks of more stuff. 1.] Usually UD finds students who come to class without the book -- without even paper to take notes! -- a royal piss-off. If the student's a mentally-askew hippie, no prob. 2.] No wrist-watch.
