For another sort of Internet dream, please read Holly Jones's latest in a series of Dispatches from the Anacostia. The essays follow "a handful of inner-city youth work[ing] to clean the river [in D.C.] as part of the Earth Conservation Corps program...and cop[ing] with the realities they return to at the end of each workday." I think you'll find them excellent.
