Go up one level for Searching and applying for jobs
Inside Higher Ed accepts postings from all accredited institutions of postsecondary education, as well as legitimate employers outside higher education. The site is specifically for professional faculty (both full time and adjunct) and administrative positions in higher ed and related fields. While we won’t necessarily reject clerical, support or other staff level jobs, the focus of the site is on professional jobs.
We won’t accept postings from diploma mills, or any employer we consider inappropriate. We won’t post jobs that violate U.S. laws and regulations about employment bias. Our Terms and Conditions make it clear that we have the right to reject any posting for any reason. An important note — there are institutions with legal rights to consider religion in their hiring practices. Inside Higher Ed does accept advertising from these institutions.
You can search the jobs with keywords, using the usual constructions: “and,” “or,” “and not.” Put phrases in parentheses if you want only postings containing the entire phrase — Medieval History will return jobs with either medieval or history in the text; (Medieval History) will return only jobs containing that exact phrase. Broad terms like “professor” (hey, we’ve seen sillier) will return a lot of jobs, but probably not the most appropriate list. You’re better off using terms like (Medieval History) or (English as a Second Language). You can also narrow your search using Advanced Search, which lets you apply several criteria: keywords, categories, location, salary, type of position and more. Finally, you can browse the postings using our job categories.
Dual Career searching. It’s not unusual for both members of a couple to be academics – and it’s not unusual for couples to want to work in the same location. Inside Higher Ed’s Dual Career search is an easy way for academic couples to identify places in the U.S. where appropriate jobs for both members of a couple are available. This terrific feature allows couples to enter criteria for two separate job searches and instantly spot proximate jobs via color coded “pins” on a map.
Inside Higher Ed’s Dual Career search is attuned to the reality of academic couples – often it’s less important where two jobs are than that they’re together. Unlike dual career services that require you to enter location information as part of the search, Inside Higher Ed’s Dual Career search helps you find just what you’re looking for – jobs for each member of a couple within a reasonable distance of each other.
Visit our Dual Career search page to give it a try:
Sure. After you create and run an Advanced Search you’ll see a link labeled “Save this Search” at the top of the job list your search generates. Click the link and you’ll be taken to a short form that’ll ask you to name the search and save it. Once you do, the search will be available to you through the Saved Searches link on the My Jobs tab on your dashboard.
Every job posting is tagged with the appropriate job categories. For example, an opening for a part-time Spanish instructor will be tagged with the categories Humanities and Languages. You can find all the jobs in a particular category by using the Browse page.
You’ll also see job categories listed down the right hand side of the page when you run a search. These are all the categories associated with the jobs returned by your search. By clicking a category in that list, you’ll narrow the results on the page to just those jobs tagged with the category you click.
You sure can. Just click the “Save this Job” link at the bottom of any job posting and the job will be saved to the “My Jobs” tab on your dashboard. Even after the posting has expired from the site, you’ll still have access to it via your My Jobs list.
You can. After you run a search for jobs (a simple keyword search or an advanced search with several criteria) you’ll see a link to “Save This Search.” When you click that link you’ll be asked to name the search so you can re-run it in the future and whether you’d like to receive e-mail alerts when new jobs matching your search criteria appear on the site. You have the option of choosing a daily, weekly or monthly notification.
Not today, but we’re working on an RSS job feed. In the meantime, you can receive our news headline by RSS — use the URL http://insidehighered.com/frontpagerss2 in your reader.
Nothing would make us happier. Just click the “e-mail this job” link on any job posting page, fill out the short form with the e-mail address of the person you’d like to receive the posting, add a quick note if you like, and you’re done. We won’t capture your friends’ e-mail addresses and we won’t send any other e-mail to them.
Oh yes. And we won’t ask you to use a generic resume form either. Inside Higher Ed provides online delivery of all the documents employers require — even the tricky stuff like letters of recommendation, transcripts and lengthy writing samples. To take advantage of our online application service, you’ll need to create an Online Portfolio — more information is available in this Help file. Once you’ve created your portfolio, just click the “Apply Now” link on most ads on the site and you’re in business.
