When Brown University’s board met last weekend, it approved a budget for next year that puts total costs for undergraduates at $41,770. That’s 4.9 percent more than this year’s charge, which is just over $39,800.
Brown isn’t alone in being in the $39,800s this year. Harvard’s total billed expenses this year are $39,880. And while private colleges haven’t all announced next year’s charges, high prestige institutions below $40K seem to be topping that level this year. Both Stanford and Duke Universities recently announced increases that will take total costs from just below $40,000 to above $41,000 (a 4.5 percent increase for Stanford and a 5.1 percent increase at Duke).
