Community Colleges to Jay Leno: Shut Up

Many community college leaders can't wait until 2009, when Conan O'Brien takes over as host of "The Tonight Show." The current host, Jay Leno, has a habit of making jokes about community colleges, and there's not a lot of laughter about them at two-year institutions.

The jokes make fun of the alleged spelling ability (or lack thereof) of community college graduates, their career prospects, etc., implying that community college students just aren't that bright.

George R. Boggs, president of the American Association of Community Colleges, wrote to Leno this year, asking him to find other topics. So far, no response. (And we didn't get any response either from the publicist for "The Tonight Show.")

But Betty K. Young thinks she may have a way to get through to Leno, known for his love of motorcycles. Young, who spends a lot of time on her Harley-Davidson when she's not working as president of Northwest State Community College, has invited Leno to ride with her (either in Los Angeles or at her Ohio campus) and to talk about community colleges.

Young speaks with passion about community colleges -- from her own experience. In her letter to Leno, she noted that she had no college education at all until she was, at age 28, a single mother without many prospects. She ended up earning not only an associate degree (through Ohio University), but a bachelor's degree, a master's, a Ph.D., a J.D. and an LL.M. Earning her associate degree "changed my life faster than my Harley racing down the straight-away of Route 66," she wrote Leno.

She sent Leno a photograph of herself in academic regalia on her bike and challenged him to share it with viewers -- along with a more complete picture of community colleges. "I will set your wheels straight and give you the real story about community colleges," she wrote.

So far, Jay hasn't responded. But a spokesman for Northwest State said that the president has heard from a lot of supportive Harley-Davidson fans.

Comments on Community Colleges to Jay Leno: Shut Up

  • Who cares what Leno says?
  • Posted by Jay Bernstein , Librarian/Assistant Professor at Kingsborough Community College (CUNY) on June 3, 2005 at 9:43am EDT
  • Jay Leno is such a lame and square comedian, playing so obviously to the absolute center of the mass audience, that he is irrelevant. He is hardly a tastemaker. He's repeating stereotypes and doesn't give us credit for helping disadvantaged students jump start their careers? His routine doesn't point out that we don't have a lot of the perks senior colleges and univerities have, or that we can give more individualized attention to our students than they can at the big universities? Who cares what that jerk says?! As if his humor is so biting. Getting defensive about any snideness he may have about community colleges will not bolster the community college image. It will only show that we are so pathetic we need someone like Jay Leno to be sensitive about us and can't take a joke.

  • Proving Leno's Point?

  • My experience is similar to Dr. Young's and I am a staunch supporter of community colleges. I find it unfortunate and disturbing that the previous comment, written by a community college librarian and assistant professor, contains spelling, grammar, and sentence structure errors that give credence to Mr. Leno's stereotypical remarks. I fear the pervasive decline of an education system that turns out high school graduates who cannot spell or write - and worse, college graduates with the same shortcomings.

  • Why single out Leno?

  • Personally, I don't understand why people are upset. Leno isn't the only comedian who makes fun of community colleges, and it's not the only "topic" he covers. If you liked the joke, great. If you didn't like it, then don't watch it...there's always Letterman and O'Brien. I don't like Chris Rock's jokes, because most of them are pretty edgy, but you don't see me writing a letter telling him what not to do. That's his choice, not mine. Also, what is this: "Many community college leaders can’t wait until 2009, when Conan O’Brien takes over as host of 'The Tonight Show.'" Why? If you simply wanted to watch O'Brien, then why not just watch his show right now?

  • What were these spelling and grammar and sentence structure errors?

  • Uhhh, yeah, they're dumb
  • Posted by Alan , Career advisor at Community College on June 3, 2005 at 10:49pm EDT
  • I work at a community college, and we have many students who are extremely bright. But do we have dumb ones too? Boy howdy. The idiots who are there just to feel like they're in "big school" need a reality check, and the ones who have a real future ahead of them know better than to listen to Jay Leno.

  • Still no answer to my question: what WERE those supposed spelling, grammar, and sentence structure errors?

  • Why not? Go ahead and laugh...

  • My advice to whoever may be listening: let’s laugh this off rather than write or sign an irate letter. One of my favorite community college government instructors likes to remind me: “Preachers and journalists always get the last word.” Add late-night comedians to that list.

While I am impressed by the list of stellar achievements accomplished by community college alumni, I think any fool would know that without being told. Why don’t we just humbly keep doing our job and let Jay Leno do his?

  • Grammatical errors
  • Posted by Jennifer Garcia at Northwest Alumni on July 21, 2005 at 1:28pm EDT
  • The posting in question opens up with a sentence that is worded incorrectly. The ending of just the first sentence is obviously incorrect English language. Now, the spelling...how about the word 'univerities'? Sorry, but I am afraid the spellcheck option dinged right away on that one. Next, sentence number three is a statement that ends in a question mark. Sentence four does not make any sense. Perhaps it should have read "Leno...doesn't point out that the so-called perks senior colleges offer are replaced with individualized attention at the community college level..." The closing sentence starts with an unidentified pronoun. Starting any sentence with the word "it" leaves interpretation completely open. Finally, the last sentence is in parallel with the rest of the blog;which is up to interpretation.
