  • A faculty panel at the University of Colorado at Boulder has presented findings on allegations against Ward Churchill to another panel, and will soon present them to Churchill, The Denver Post reported. The committees are reviewing a series of misconduct allegations against Churchill -- charges that he says are unfair and are motivated by political anger over his controversial views.
  • Holly Moore has announced her resignation as president of Shoreline Community College, six months after the faculty voted "no confidence" in her leadership, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.
  • Professional and scientific staff members at the University of Iowa voted by a nearly 2-to-1 margin against a plan to unionize with the Service Employees International Union, The Iowa City Press-Citizen reported.
  • Mississippi's Tax Commission has agreed to a one-year delay of a tax on student meal plans, The Clarion-Ledger reported. The commission notified colleges July 1 that it was lifting a long-standing exemption on a 7 percent sales tax on the plans. But after colleges complained that the change came after students received aid packages and made financial plans for the new academic year, the commission agreed to the delay.
  • College students are expected to spend $34 billion as they return to campuses this fall, up 33 percent from a year ago, according to the annual survey of consumers by the National Retail Federation. Among the top spending items: textbooks ($11.9 billion), electronics ($8.2 billion), clothing ($5.7 billion), dormitory and apartment furnishings ($3.6 billion), class supplies ($3 billion), and shoes $2 billion).
