Quick Takes: Arrests at TA Rally at NYU, Halifax Community College President Defends Job, Ky. Judge Picks Student Body President

  • More than 1,000 people rallied Wednesday to back graduate students at New York University who want to keep their union, and 78 were arrested in acts of civil disobedience, Crain’s New York Business reported. NYU, which has been the only private university with a TA union, announced last month that it would no longer negotiate with it.
  • Ted Gasper, the president of Halifax Community College, in North Carolina, is defending his job performance amid a state board’s investigation of his management, WRAL reported. Gasper has angered faculty members and students with budget cuts that he says were necessary.
  • A state judge in Kentucky has ordered the second-place finisher declared the winner of the University of Kentucky student body presidency, The Louisville Courier-Journal reported. The judge ruled that the university should not have overturned the disqualification of the winner. More appeals are expected.
