  • The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded Wednesday morning to Yves Chauvin of the Institut Français du Pétrole, Robert H. Grubbs of the California Institute of Technology, and Richard R. Schrock of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The scholars were honored for their work on the development of the metathesis method in organic synthesis.
  • Four campuses in the Texas State University System, all of which have been closed since Hurricane Rita, plan to resume classes during the week of October 17, the institutions announced in a joint statement. The colleges are: Lamar University, Lamar Institute of Technology, Lamar State College at Port Arthur, and Lamar State College at Orange.
  • Appalachian Technical College, in Georgia, has suspended three instructors while investigating charges that they received online degrees based on academic work done by someone else, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (free registration required) reported.
