Quick Takes: Middlebury and Monterey Join, Iowa Grad Student Arrested for Threat, Whitewater Dean Loses Post, Artwork Angers Muslim Students

  • Middlebury College announced Friday that it had finished a deal under which the Monterey Institute of International Studies became an affiliate of the college. Academic programs at the two institutions are not expected to see immediate changes, but Middlebury is expected to strengthen Monterey financially. While Middlebury is primarily an undergraduate institution and Monterey is a graduate and professional institution, both colleges emphasize foreign languages and international study. Many Middlebury faculty members were initially skeptical of the idea of linking the two colleges, but support has grown as Middlebury officials have pledged that there will be no financial loss to or shift in emphasis of the college.
  • Police arrested a University of Iowa graduate student Thursday after reports that he called the provost’s office to complain about the way he was being treated and made references to a 1991 incident in which a graduate student killed six people, The Iowa City Press-Citizen reported.
  • The University of Wisconsin at Whitewater removed Lee Jones from his position as dean, and started the process of revoking his tenure, the Associated Press reported. Jones faces charges that he misused university money — and reports have surfaced of similar charges at his previous administrative job, at Florida State University. Jones has been active nationally in programs to promote the advancement of black academics. Through his lawyers, he has denied wrongdoing.
  • Muslim students at San Joaquin Delta College are demanding that a piece of art be removed from an art exhibit at the college, The Stockton Record reported. College officials, citing academic freedom, are keeping the work, “Kalashnikov Jihad,” which features a ceramic assault rifle wrapped in pages from the Koran.

artwork should stay

Just so you people know, I think the artwork should stay. Muslims are free to depict their religion in a more flattering manner if they so wish.

I feel like this article didn’t give enough information about the meaning of the art for any of us to really have an opinion on it...is there anybody who knows more about it who can offer some insight, or link to a picture? It seems like a really interesting situation.

Roxi, Hampshire College, at 9:37 pm EST on December 5, 2005

why does it matter?

Roxi, Does it matter what the “meaning” of it is. It obviously conveyed some message to some Muslims that inspired them to demand its censorship. Therefore, at some level, it has some meaning to these Muslims.
