- California State University at Stanislaus has started a new mater of science program in ecology and sustainability.
- Georgetown University has started a master's degree in law for journalists who write about legal issues.
- Hampton University has started a Ph.D. program in atmospheric and planetary sciences, becoming the only historically black college to offer a doctoral degree in the field.
- Middlebury College is starting a master of arts prograqm in Chinese, with the goal of training more teachers of Chinese for schools at a time of growing interest in the language.
- The University of Illinois at Chicago is starting a new doctoral program in communication that will focus on the social implications of new technologies, such as cell phones and iPods.
- The University of Texas at Dallas is starting a Ph.D. program in criminology.
