Quick Takes: Barring Undocumented Students, HR Chief Fired Over Anti-Gay Column, IPO for Grand Canyon U., Apollo in Canada, More Anger Over Schlafly Honor, Inappropriate Influence on Ratings, Surge at Teach for America, Arizona State Drops 3 Sports

  • The North Carolina Community College System announced Tuesday that, based on an advisory letter from the state Attorney General’s office — which cited federal law — it would no longer admit illegal immigrants into degree programs. The decision came despite a statement on the matter from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that seems to contradict the state’s interpretation that federal law limits the ability of undocumented students to enroll in public colleges. The statement reads, in part, “The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) does not require any school to determine a student’s status (i.e., whether or not he or she is legally allowed to study). DHS also does not require any school to request immigration status information prior to enrolling students or to report to the government if they know a student is out of status, except in the case of those who came on student visas or for exchange purposes and are registered with the Student Exchange and Visitor Program.” The 58-college system estimates that in the 2006-7 academic year, only 112 degree-seeking students, out of 296,540, lacked proof of legal residency.
  • The University of Toledo has fired Crystal Dixon as associate vice president of human resources following an uproar over a column she wrote asserting that gay people can change their sexual orientation and could never be considered “civil rights victims.” In the column, she compared herself as a black woman to a gay person. She wrote: “I take great umbrage at the notion that those choosing the homosexual lifestyle are ‘civil rights victims.’ Here’s why. I cannot wake up tomorrow and not be a Black woman. I am genetically and biologically a Black woman and very pleased to be so as my Creator intended. Daily, thousands of homosexuals make a life decision to leave the gay lifestyle....” An assistant to Dixon’s lawyer said that she was considering suing the university, either on First Amendment or other grounds. A statement from the university defended the dismissal saying that Dixon’s views were “in direct contradiction to university policies and procedures, as well as the institutional core values as defined in our strategic plan, and called into question her continued ability to lead a critical function within the administration as personnel actions or decisions taken in her capacity as
associate vice president for human resources could be challenged or placed at risk.”
  • The parent company that owns Grand Canyon University, in Arizona, announced plans Tuesday for an initial public offering of its stock. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, two of the nation’s biggest investment banks, including Credit Suisse and Merrill Lynch are backing Grand Canyon Education, Inc.’s plan for a $230 million IPO. The for-profit company bought Grand Canyon, which was a struggling private Christian college, in 2004, and has increased its size and reach significantly. In a memo to employees Tuesday, Brent Richardson, the company’s CEO, said the company hoped to be traded on the NASDAQ would “use the proceeds from this planned IPO to help fund continued growth of our student body, ground campus, and online offerings.” Experts on higher education financing said the proposed IPO was noteworthy in part because it suggested that despite the economic downturn dampening some aspects of the financial markets, some of the country’s biggest investment banks are betting that the for-profit higher education market remains attractive to investors.
  • The Apollo Group, the parent company of the University of Phoenix, announced plans Tuesday to open Meritus University, which will be based in in New Brunswick and will offer online degree programs to working professionals throughout Canada.
  • Protest is growing at Washington University in St. Louis over an honorary degree to be awarded this week to Phyllis Schlafly, the anti-feminist activist. Fourteen members of the law school faculty have released a letter calling on the university to abandon its plans. “We are fully committed to the principle of free speech.... Commencement, however, is first and foremost a time of celebration of the intellectual accomplishments of our students,” the letter said. “It is, we believe, a disservice to those whom we honor to inject into the proceedings a person who has devoted her life to staking out and promoting polarizing, anti-intellectual positions.” The letter went on to say that the objection to Schlafly “stems from the fact that she has devoted her career to demagoguery and anti-intellectualism in the pursuit of her political agenda. She has berated scientific inquiry; apart from her particular stance on the Equal Rights Amendment, she has demonstrated a lack of concern for — and sometimes outright bigotry toward — not only women, but gays and lesbians.” Meanwhile, 25 students and faculty members protested outside the home of Mark Wrighton, the university chancellor, and vowed to return unless plans for the degree change. Schlafly told The St. Louis Post-Dispatch that those opposing the degree were “tacky,” adding: “They are a bunch of bitter women. It was 25 years ago that we buried the Equal Rights Amendment and they are still whining about it.” Washington University is standing behind the decision, but issued a new statement Tuesday saying that the university is “not endorsing” Schlafly’s views, and calling her “an alumna ... whose life and work have had a broad impact on American life and have sparked widespread debate and controversies that in many cases have helped people better formulate and articulate their own views about the values they hold.”
  • The reliability of Britain’s National Student Survey is being questioned after tapes emerged of lecturers at Kingston University telling students to give the institution high marks or to risk their degrees having little value. The Times of London reported on the scandal and also has the tape.
  • Teach for America is attracting more of the top college graduates. The New York Times reported that the organization, which places new grads as teachers, received 24,700 applications this spring, up 37 percent. Almost 11 percent of the graduating class at Yale University applied, and Teach for America is now the top employer at institutions such as Duke, Emory, George Washington, Georgetown and New York Universities and Spelman College.
  • Arizona State University, citing budget constraints, on Tuesday announced that it would eliminate three men’s athletic teams: swimming, tennis and wrestling. Athletes on the teams will continue to receive any scholarship awards through their senior years.

North Carolina Community College System

The NCCCS must be applauded. Tax payer dollars are funding education for citizens, not illegal aliens who continue their assault on the economic and social system in the USA—and are committing theft by attending classes they do not pay for. No illegal has a right to an education, health care, a job, or housing, as those are privileges reserved for citizens who have contributed to society through work and patriotism in its various forms. An illegal alien is nothing more than a common criminal and those schools who admit illegal aliens and the children of illegal aliens who are also illegal aliens are committing crimes against their society and nation and their administrators and the teachers who educate the children of illegal aliens should be fired.

Dr Arthur Frederick Ide, at 8:20 am EDT on May 14, 2008

Dr. Said What?

Dr. Ide,

In a time of political correctness, how could you say such a thing about illegal immigrant students? Well put.

Bill, at 9:05 am EDT on May 14, 2008

“The North Carolina Community College System announced Tuesday that, based on an advisory letter from the state Attorney General’s office — which cited federal law — it would no longer admit illegal immigrants into degree programs.”

LOSERS! The state just wanted an excuse to exercise their political opinion at the expense of the younger generations who need education more than ever.

“only 112 degree-seeking students, out of 296,540, lacked proof of legal residency.”

So they barely save anything. Obviously, this is just a punitive and mean statement.

Re: Dixon. Did they give her the opportunity to resign first?

kgotthardt, at 10:35 am EDT on May 14, 2008

Doc Ide, that’s harsh

Common crime is as old as humanity, but illegal immigration is not. According to the American Heritage website, before 1882 immigration to the US was unregulated—fortunately for many of our ancestors.I have never heard anything in the Christian Bible about illegal immigration—rather there is a lot about welcoming the stranger. According to you, Naomi and her husband Elimelech were common criminals because they left Judea for Moab in time of famine. Moreover, most illegal immigrants do work and pay taxes.

Grocheio, Asst VP Planning and Institutional Effectiveness at Shorter College, at 10:35 am EDT on May 14, 2008

Illegal immigrants deserve the rights of all immigrants

Dr. Ide’s bigotry against illegal immigrants is the same kind of “blame-the-victim” bigotry as Hitler’s antisemitism, or Strom Thurmond-type white supremacy.

Illegal immigrants are the “salt of the earth.” They want only the chance to work hard to make a modest living for their families. Their illegal status makes them easy prey for super-exploitative employers who can pay them less than the minimum wage with no benefits, then call La Migra on pay day and get them all deported.

Dr. Ide and bigots like him want to misdirect our anger against these super-exploited workers and away from the real problem: the illegal status.

To understand the truth about illegal immigrants, you need to understand slavery. What made slavery profitable was the legal status of slaves. Slaves had no rights. Therefore, they could be exploited to the maximum possible extent.

So-called “illegal aliens” are workers who have almost no legal rights. Therefore, they are super-exploited by employers. They do very hard work for very low wages. They pay taxes — employers have to deduct them — but they get few benefits.

They exploit no one. They are super-exploited. They are like other workers, except for one thing: their legal status. All workers should have the same legal rights and as many rights as we can get. That is the only way one group of workers can be not super-exploited with their cheaper labor dragging down wage rates for all workers. There is no other way.

Today, the United Bosses of America are doing all they can to encourage “legal” workers to think that “illegal” workers are our enemies. Build walls, patrol the borders, or call “La migra” (Immigration)!

Get the workers fighting each other, but make sure they do not recognize the truth. Here’s the truth: We have got to do away with the category of “illegal” workers. “Illegal” workers have almost no rights. That’s why they can be super-exploited. That’s why their cheap labor pulls down wage rates for all other workers.

And that’s why employers love “illegal” workers — because they work cheap, cannot organize a union and cannot strike for better pay and conditions. They are as close to slaves as a boss can get, in these “enlightened” times.

So we need a workers’ campaign. Full rights for everybody on American soil! If your feet hit dry ground, you have the same rights as everybody else. (See http://tinyurl.com/wszpp)

Opposing those who, like Dr. Ide and his ilk, attack illegal workers is a good start to building this kind of movement.

What?

” .. over an honorary degree to be awarded this week to Phyllis Schlafly, the anti-feminist activist ..”

Whoa. Read her public bio —

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phyllis_Schlafly

A working mother of six who had a working mother, Phi Beta Kappa at 19, law degree after motherhood. That’s not a feminist? Or a Democrat feminist?

” .. Fourteen members of the law school faculty have released a letter calling on the university to abandon its plans. “We are fully committed to the principle of free speech .. however .. we believe, a disservice to those whom we honor to inject into the proceedings a person who has devoted her life to staking out and promoting polarizing, anti-intellectual positions.”

As opposed to, say, Noam Chomsky, Billy Ayers, or Ward Churchill? Please .. your politics are showing, very ugly ..

BTW: it takes UNANIMOUS approval of both the WU commencement committee and WU trustee board for an honorary degree to be approved. Seriously doubt the position espoused by critics could pass those reviews.

Frank, at 10:45 am EDT on May 14, 2008

Inconvenient fact

” .. And that’s why employers love “illegal” workers — because they work cheap ..”

Inconvenient fact: many of the anti-illegal movement members are working-class craftspersons (carpenters, roofers) who have been LAID-OFF due to the flood of illegals into the U.S. To think otherwise would be as absurd as an English professor trying to convince an educated public that Stalinism was politically-maligned by the CIA.

There is a solution to this. Illegal immigrants should return to their country of origin with their families. And get in line behind the 1,000,000+ who are following the rules.

Simply Incorrect

“...those schools who admit illegal aliens and the children of illegal aliens who are also illegal aliens are committing crimes against their society and nation and their administrators and the teachers who educate the children of illegal aliens should be fired.”

Not sure what he’s a doctor of, but he certainly doesn’t understand how public education works. Teachers don’t have a choice of students to teach — if they are admitted to the school, they will be taught. And as for “the children of illegal aliens” — if they are born here, they are American citizens — the same as any of the rest of us whose ancestors came into this country.

Ms. Schlafly

Seems to me that we have heard quite a bit of “tacky whining from a bitter Ms. Schlafly” over the years. By the way, why don’t we ever hear men’s discourse described as “whining?”

Hey Grover, why do we need to limit our granting of “full rights to everybody on American SOIL"? Why not grant it if they just make into our airspace, or within a determined number of miles from shore? Isn’t the granting of political rights just that—political (i.e., unnatural and artificial)? Civl rights aren’t given based upon one’s locale; and human rights aren’t denied based upon one’s locale. Keep unlike things separate, please.

And one more thing. . . Why isn’t anyone speaking up on the Crystal Dixon situation? Where are those who (usually) call for “academic freedom” and “freedom of speech"? It’s a bad day on insidehighered.com when the only people whose freedoms are being quelled are those who don’t toe the (liberal) party line of academe.

By the way, did anybody actually see the movie Expelled?

wassupdoc, piledhigher&deeper, at 11:20 am EDT on May 14, 2008

Illegal immigation is illegal

We must stop using the excuse that in the 1800’s, there were no regulations on immigration. In the 1800’s there were no building regulations, tax laws, or motor vehicle laws. But they are put into place as needed. The U.S. has immigration laws, and regardless of whether you agree with them or not, they are law. You must stop at a red light whether you feel like it or not. You cannot rob another person, even if you feel like you deserve what they have. In our history, land was given freely to those wishing to settle in new areas, but this doesn’t happen anymore. Why? Times change. Laws happen.

Aothervoice, at 11:31 am EDT on May 14, 2008

Limited Rights?

“To understand the truth about illegal immigrants, you need to understand slavery.

They pay taxes — employers have to deduct them — but they get few benefits.”

Grover, I agree that they do have rights...among them the right to legally apply for citizenship, the right to return to their country of origin, where BTW they can exercise their full rights as citizens.

I would agree with your parallel to slavery, IF the slaves at that time had been eligible for medical coverage, free education or any other of the tax payer supported benefits of our infrastructure which are so valuable that illegals risk their lives to come here. However, they were not and as such your comparison is a slap in the face to slaves of that time.

As far as taxes, a business that would take “deductions for an illegal employee” and then call INS to deport them, would be really stupid and would run the risk of being audited themselves. The point of paying an illegal under the table is no reporting, no paperwork, cheap labor expense. And what would be the motivation for turning them in? Why would an employer give up that gravy train?

R.F., at 11:31 am EDT on May 14, 2008

Grover is actually correct; exploitation must be stopped

Grover, You actually have some sense behind what you are saying. Yes, illegal immigrants are exploited by big business. And yes, big (especially big-agra) business wants to keep them illegal. They want this because they cost a lot less than citizens do.

this argument is the strongest one I know of to follow US law very, very strictly in this area. Any type of law that provides a benefit to an illegal, makes it easier for them to stay in this country.. as an illegal. These laws (driving licenses, schooling, hospitals, etc) are major enablers for exploitation of these workers.

I am always saddened that so many progressives ignore this fact and instead push for tax-payer paid or sanctioned means to encourage their exploitation.

Personally, I do all I can not to use illegal (aka exploited labor). For example, I made sure my roofers where legal. And I have no qualms in looking for resturants which don’t exploit. If I have to eat out less in order to support living wages (which at a minumum require US citizenship) then I will, and I do.

The way to a meaningful immigration law is not through making it easier for big business to exploit workers, but to make it harder. If illegal grape pickers are kept off the vineyards, then the wine companies will lobby, and get, permits and visas to allow for legal pickers — at a decent wage monitored by the DOL. However, since the illegals are available, then they are happy with the status quo.

It may be nice and latte-liberal fashionable to support these short sighted policies for making it easier for illegals to stay in the US as an illegal, but it merely supports exploitation.

Schlafly & ERA

Schlafly fought the ERA because it vested Congress with extra power. She was against bigger government, not feminists. Remember, this was during the Vietnam war era, a time of aggressive public protest. Congress was not held in high esteem. Had the one sentence of the ERA regarding Congress been eliminated, the amendment likely would have passed.
