At Liberty University, it’s time to hit the slopes for Christ.

A ski park and lodge are the latest recreational amenities at Liberty, the Lynchburg, Va.-based institution founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell Sr. The Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, which opened on the campus Aug. 1, is one of a series of additions made in recent years to attract students to the evangelical Christian campus. Indeed, Liberty is taking on the feel of something between a summer camp and a theme park, complete with ice skating, paintball fields, motocross tracks, indoor soccer, bow hunting and shooting ranges.

Lynchburg gets a little snow each year, but it’s hardly a ski bum’s paradise. Given that limitation, Liberty has covered its slopes with a synthetic material called Snowflex, allowing visitors to ski on the surface all year around. Lee Beaumont, director of auxiliary services at Liberty, said the ski center is part of the university’s effort to create recreational alternatives for students who don’t engage in the booze-infused partying synonymous with much of college life.

“We don’t really have Greek life here. We don’t have co-ed dorms. We don’t have these wild beer parties,” he said. “So you need to give kids a productive and clean way to enjoy themselves.”

While the goal of good, clean fun sounds noble, universities frequently take criticism for spending money on amenities that have little obvious educational value. Liberty is unlikely to be exempted from such criticism, and Beaumont says he expects it.

“Of course you’re going to get those criticisms,” he said. “But college is not just about sitting in a classroom and listening to a professor.”

“It’s about your physical, mental and spiritual well being,” he added. “If one of them is out of whack, then all of them are out of whack.”

Jerry Falwell Jr., the university’s chancellor, began investigating the idea of a ski center after he returned from a ski trip in Utah several years ago. After conducting some research on fake snow, Falwell decided to try out Snowflex for himself, taking his family to a park in Scotland. While there are about 30 Snowflex facilities in Europe, Liberty’s three slopes are the first in the United States, according to

university officials.

“We were watching the local kids [in Scotland] who were skiing, and it was really our target demographic,” Beaumont said.

Bringing an 11-acre ski center to Liberty proved a significant undertaking. In addition to importing synthetic snow, the university built a ski lift and a two-story “chalet” that spans 10,000 square feet. The wood-floored chalet is appointed with rustic décor and, thanks to donations from a longtime supporter of the university, plenty of taxidermy. Bear, moose and deer line the walls and hang from a stone fireplace, giving the chalet the look of a big game hunter's cabin.

The project has cost the university about $4 million, according to Beaumont. Liberty can expect to make some of that money back, however. During the peak hours of Thursday through Sunday, the university will charge visitors from the general public $7 an hour, and students will pay the lower rate of $4. Additionally, Liberty expects a recruitment advantage.

“You’d be shocked at the number of hardcore snowboarders that want to come here,” Beaumont said.

A Falwell-Style 'Gimmick'

Adding a ski slope to Liberty is a move straight out of the Falwell playbook, according to Kevin Roose, a Brown University student who went “undercover” at Liberty to a write an expose on the university. While writing his book, The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner’s Semester at America’s Holiest University, Roose interviewed the late Falwell Sr., who discussed the ski project with excitement.

During his discussion with Falwell, who founded the Moral Majority, Roose said Falwell was unapologetic about doing whatever he could to attract students.

“I don’t think he would have objected to the word gimmick [in describing the ski slope],” Roose said. “Jerry Falwell belonged to the ‘By any means necessary’ school of evangelism. He gave away cars to the first people who registered; he had a video game contest. I think if he could have gotten away with it, he would have given [new students] pieces of Noah’s Ark.”

During his semester at Liberty, Roose said there seemed no limit to the programs officials developed to attract and retain students.

“It always sort of felt like you were at Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory,” he said. “They were always trying new things and things other schools maybe wouldn’t try. It sort of dovetails with the sort of Southern Baptist [philosophy of] ‘Get ‘em in, get ‘em baptized, get ‘em registered.’ I can’t see Yeshiva University building a zipline for Yahweh, but I’ve learned to not count the Falwells out when it comes to doing things on the cutting edge.”

Tyler Lee, a senior at Liberty, said few of the attractions like skiing and motocross were in place when he decided to attend. Nonetheless, he’s come to enjoy the accouterments of the campus. Lee, who had no previous snowboarding experience, has spent the last month trying to master the sport. One black eye later, he says he’s gotten pretty confident on the slopes.

For Lee, Liberty’s commitment to recreational programming helps to prove a point. Students at Liberty are often in the awkward position of answering skeptics who question their college choice, he said. When students from other colleges raise that question, Lee says the ski slope provides one more answer.

“We want to show them we can have just as much fun or more fun and not have a hangover,” he said. “You can’t get this anywhere else. Nobody else in North America has what we have now, so it’s exclusive.”

  • yea, I say unto you go forth and spread snow to all the people, and it was good.

  • Come for the snow...stay for the freaks! Well I guess when Jesus walks out of a campus in disgust you need something else to attract the unwary. Does this compensate for Tinky-Winky being "gay" or humiliating the College Democrats last spring? Nope. I guess right wing politics...I mean real spirituality isn't enough of a draw. Just one question: Did Sun Myung Moon have to bail you out again?

  • Hmmmmmmmmm. My son, an avid snowboarder, reports that at most slopes, they pray for snow. I wonder whether Liberty tried that.

  • I wonder how critical you would be if this were the cutting edge project of a public school university using taxpayer dollars and pushing a liberal agenda. If my kid chooses to ski after class instead of drink and have sex, then I believe my tuition payments are actually buying an education. The college kids at my university spend their free time binge drinking, sleeping around, and not studying because they have hangovers. Do you really want to criticize the Falwells for this or is it just because you don't agree with their politics and beliefs?

  • Typical thinking of the "Liberty Dad". Sterotype all public institutions into the "liberal" category, with students running around having sex and drinking rather than studying. I've got news for him... the students at private, "religious" schools drink and have sex too (at the same rate as public institutions). They just lie about it and cover it up, as they are taught to do by their idols in the "religious right".

It must feel good to be able to wipe your hands of all of that evil and sin, and look the other way as it goes on directly under your nose. I believe it's called hypocrisy.

  • Sorry Dad. Open your Eyes.

  • They binge drink, have sex, and don't study at Liberty too. They just repent daily and pray they're never caught. Having spent many years among fundamentalists and Pentecostals (including a few years at the typical Bible college and a fundamentalist seminary), they have the same sexual desires and curiosity, rebellion against authority, and desire to do the forbidden as any other undergraduates. Every year frustrated parents dump off their sullen offspring at Jesus-U hoping for a miracle alternative to military school or for them to find a (Christian) spouse because its better to marry than burn! I remember way back when Washington Bible College was called "Washington Bridal College" for that reason (in fact, back at Fundy U we had a lot of cute names like that for our sister schools!) But kids learn to talk the talk when folks are looking. And the illusion continues. Even in my lil secular school, there are a few pregnancies among the Campus Crusade Crowd every year. And it isn't the "sinner-friend" crowd doing the planting and watering. They cover it up by crowing about how they're still "more moral than you sinners because we ain't getting abortions!" Amazing how they forget what caused their condition to begin with! Reality is a horrible thing to deny. But then again, maybe skiiing away all those hormones, combined with Graham Cracker Therapy will help reduce the size of the moral blemish. No, they're not all "doing it." But a substantial number indulge in things parents can never imagine in Fundamentalist schools. If only there were home school universities, you can keep them isolated from reality for another four years. (Well there is PHC, but they're having sex there too!) But unless you decide on the "Heaven's Gate" (or Origen's) solution, undergraduates will be undergraduates. The smart ones use protection.

  • Oh, LOL, "Mr. Reality"...yes, there are kids at evangelical universities drinking and getting pregnant. But it's really amusing that you don't understand that a lot of kids are at Liberty because they want to be there, not sullen and forced into being there. Most students at Liberty like the spiritual emphasis and all the recreational activities; they've chosen to go there because they like the whole package. Many, if not most, of them are committed to the lifestyle that the school projects. My oldest child goes there and absolutely loves it. My younger child wants to go there too. They could go to just about any school, public, private, they could get into and that we could arrange financially, but Liberty is where they want to go.

  • WOW...Liberty Dad.....Are you naive or what?? I attended an institution similar to Liberty....and have spent time on Liberty's campus. The same stuff goes on at Christian schools as at secular school......the only difference is that student's at Christian schools are much better deceivers (not because they want to be...but because they have to be!). So don't be surprised if you child has some "apres ski" activities that you don't know about. Although, as long as you keep your eyes closed, who cares. It more about perception than reality, isn't it Liberty Dad? Happy Skiing!

  • "I wonder how critical you would be if this were the cutting edge project of a public school university using taxpayer dollars and pushing a liberal agenda." I'll be happy to tell you. As a liberal Democrat, I'd be very skeptical of it. Too many cutting edge projects that cost a great deal end up producing few benefits. Colleges that geared up for computer programming twenty-odd years ago are now scaling their programs back, despite huge expenditures in hardware, software, and people. Mission creep is an awful thing to watch, and expensive new programs can divert resources from established programs. And pushing a liberal agenda--surprise, Dad--would really incite me. Most of us don't push a political agenda. Our work demands that we lead students to challenge whatever beliefs they aren't questioning, not with the idea of changing those beliefs, but of having the students learn to question. And many of us can come off as convincingly conservative if a class is uncritically liberal. You'd probably have been amazed when a young woman from a very conservative religious upbringing told me that reading Harry Potter for one of my classes hadn't changed her religious beliefs that such books needed to be handled with great care, but that she had found the entire experience to be spiritually and intellectually enriching.

  • Actually, that's Dr. Dad,...to you.
  • Posted by Liberty Dad on August 25, 2009 at 5:45pm EDT
  • Wow. I don't know what to say. I am neither naive nor "a freak." I have been working with young adults for more than two decades. I thought this forum would have a little more professionalism about it. I am disappointed.

For the record, I went to a school much like Liberty and, believe me, you can get just as drunk and just as pregnant there as at the public secular schools I have worked at. I know this. I was talking about the fact that Liberty is trying to give their students alternatives for fun. I didn't think any of us, liberal, conservative, or whatever, wanted to see more young college students binge drinking and getting caught up in harmful relations. I know other schools do things for their students, too. But the article was about Liberty.

My child chose to go to Liberty and was not "dumped" there to find a spouse. I support my child's decisions and worry about my child all the time, even though I have taught them all I could and believe they will do their best. At great expense and sacrifice, I have sent my child to that school for a good education. My child could have gone to the university where I work, but chose not to for many reasons.

For those of you who have been burned by Christians and Christian Institutions, I am truly sorry and ask your forgiveness on those that have hurt and/or disappointed you. You are right, I should not stereotype all public schools just as you should not stereotype all Christian Institutions.

As to this forum, I am just about done with it. It is neither academic nor open-minded too much of the time.

Final note: It is not hypocrisy to believe in something and fail at living up to it. It is simply being human.

MORONS.

  • School or gimmick? And why are they winning?
  • Posted by From another college in VA on August 27, 2009 at 11:15am EDT
  • Come on now, be fair. Yes, Liberty Dad started fishing for yet another liberal/conservative argument; then he got irritated when people took the bait. He threatened to walk away. No surprise there; many people do when their comments are challenged, regardless of what side they are coming from.

However, Liberty Dad does ask a valid question: are we being critical the gimmick itself, or do we think it's stupid because Liberty is the school that chose to do it? And, are we secretely jealous that it's actually working?

Personally, I would mock the heck out of this faux-snow ski slope, no matter which school decided to put it on top of a mountain. But it's so much more fun, when Liberty is the one doing it! Even Liberty Dad should be able to see that this school invites all of it's criticism with their cheesy marketing schemes. Their gimmicks scream "Have we got a deeeeeeeal for you!" in a really loud, obnoxious, used-car-salesman voice. So, regardless of the quality of the education Liberty actually has to offer, there will always be a significant segment of the population who is sceptical of this...simply because they are marketing themselves as a Jesus Camp/Amusement Park/Lifestyle Center, with a college education thrown in for free.

On the flip side, whether you like it or not, you have to admit they are doing a great job of marketing the school. Liberty has a niche audience, and they're selling the heck out of the school to those people. That is something most of the other liberal arts schools in Virginia are struggling with.

So, we're snobs...and we think Liberty is an academic joke...but they've got more students, and they're not struggling financially.

    Who is winning here?

  • I just recently applied to Liberty after looking at other programs. I must admit that Liberty being a Christian school was a draw. However, being a christian and acting as one isn't always synonomous.

I have done my share of chasing women and drinking all while I was saved. Being a christian school or christian doesn't mean you are any less tempted by what the world has to offer. Good or bad. You have to make a conscious effort to be better than you were the day before. Everybody fails the test at one time or another.

Ultimately, I chose Liberty for the education and the flexibility it offered. I could care less about the snow. I don't snowboard.

To Liberty dad, I'm sure you've done a great job raising your kid. They will be fine. Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6
