Texas Southern Drops Donor's Name From School

The Tavis Smiley School of Communication at Texas Southern University, will no longer feature the broadcaster's name, The Houston Chronicle reported. Texas Southern named the school in his honor after he promised to donate $1 million and to raise another $1 million from other sources - but Smiley and the university have been locked in a dispute over terms of his gift. Smiley has given less than planned, citing the recession among other factors, although he has said he wants to give all the money he personally pledged. He said that scandal's involving the university's former president made it difficult to raise other funds. The university said that, since Smiley isn't giving the money that was expected, it needs to have a "naming opportunity" to raise money from others.
