The University of Virginia has released a special video announcement requesting that spectators refrain from inserting an expletive into the university's popular fight song.
The issue that inspired this public service announcement is the addition of the ad lib "fuck Tech" into the song during the pause after the line "we come from Old Virginia, where all is bright and gay."
In the 1970s it became common for fans to shout "not gay" during the pause, which was changed to the dig at their rival university following student activism in the early 2000s.
The video included students, athletes, professors, the head football coach, the university's president and alumni including celebrity Tina Fey.
The first part of the video included community members describing what the song meant to them, before going into clips of them singing the song in question and pausing at the infamous moment. The video concludes with a history of the offensive improvisations and requests to not besmirch the university's reputation by continuing to include these antics.
There have been some criticisms on Twitter of the video, saying that the divisive "not gay" is not comparable in offense to "fuck Tech."
