For Duke University's lacrosse team, some semblance of normalcy -- if not closure -- came last weekend, when the team whose previous season had been canceled amid the now-infamous rape case that roiled the campus returned to action for the first time. Thousands of fans cheered and few (if anyone) jeered, according to published reports.
The quintessential college town is lush and lined with quaint boulevards. It's Ann Arbor, Mich., Charlottesville, Va., and Boulder, Colo. It's dive bars and bookstores and movie theaters that still charge less than a meal.
For many students, living in a college town is a key part of their undergraduate experience. And for many faculty members and administrators, living in a college town is a key part of their adult lives. The University of Massachusetts Press is about to publish a scholarly analysis of these locales, The American College Town. Blake Gumprecht, the author and associate professor of geography at the University of New Hampshire, responded to e-mail questions about his new book.
