Full disclosure. I am an ECAR fellow, in the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research, which was founded and is run by Richard Katz. The single best piece of writing in recent memory on the large scale structural forces shaping higher education and the role of technology in impacting these forces is the first chapter of The Tower and the Cloud, "The Gathering Cloud: Is This the End of the Middle?"

We had the Cornell Interactive Theater CITE come to campus this week to offer workshops on communication issues specific to working in the academy. HR workshops on gender, race, harassment and communication are, in my experience, not productive. The work that CITE does is the exception. Perhaps since the CITE actors emerged out of academia, know our culture, and speak our language, they are able to offer relevant and engaging scenarios that spark authentic discussions.

Where social media make sense to me are as a method of exposing the fact that organizations are made up of people. I don't want to read blog posts or Facebook status updates or tweets from Microsoft, Google, Blackboard, Adobe, Apple etc.... But I do want to hear from the people who work at these companies. Particularly the people who work in the education divisions of these companies.

This weekend I spent some times reading the NYTimes, reading a novel, exchanging e-mail, watching a TED Talk, and surfing the Web. The only thing notable about any of this is that I did all these things on my ipod touch. I also did some work on a couple of courses, reading some articles, looking at some curricular videos, and checking out course blogs and wikis -- none of which I did on my ipod touch.

Not sure if I should be depressed or elated when I learn about someone who is two years ahead of me in his or her thinking. Lev Gonick, CIO at Case Western Reserve, seems to be one of these two-year-in-the-future type people. Learning tech needs some new blood. We need to recruit young people to go into our discipline (actually - we need to define our discipline - but that is a larger debate). We need to encourage people in their twenties to work in academic technology units, to join learning tech companies, and to start their own learning technology companies.
