Welcome to your October 2009 "Insider Update" - the newsletter for readers of Inside Higher Ed. Once a month we send a quick rundown on what's happening at Inside Higher Ed: events, accomplishments and a bit of fun. If you'd prefer not to receive this newsletter, instructions for unsubscribing are below.

In case you missed it
Steve Kolowich's article on the future of the university library, as envisioned by the higher education technology group Ithaka at a meeting to discuss "sustainable scholarship," was our most viewed and most e-mailed article last month. Steve would have had the hat trick, but an essay by Maria Maisto, a contingent faculty member in Ohio and president of the Board of Directors of New Faculty Majority: The National Coalition for Adjunct and Contingent Equity, on her "Adjunct's Moment of Truth" was by far our most commented story in September.
Inside Higher Ed News
NEW ON THE SITE: In "The Importance of Mentors," new Career Advice columnist Terry Givens considers the lessons learned and confidence gained from those who encouraged her -- and her obligation to do the same for others. Read the column here and keep an eye out for Professor Givens' regular column, "Running 'Round the Ivory Tower."

OUT AND ABOUT: Scott Jaschik heads to San Francisco October 7-8 to speak at the 40th Annual Leadership Congress of the Association of Community College Trustees.

Intellectual Affairs columnist Scott McLemee is speaking on "The Digital Public Sphere: A Panel Discussion on Books in the Age of New Media" at the 2009 Obermann Humanities Symposium at the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies of the University of Iowa, taking place October 15-17.

Laura McFarland, Doug Lederman, Rick Plotkin, Clint Tanner and Bill Trombley will be representing Inside Higher Ed at the annual conference of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) in Las Vegas, October 19-21. Stop by booth number 314 to get the latest on Inside Higher Ed's recruiting service innovations (and pick up some swag, of course).

Kathlene Collins is also heading west to San Diego for the National HERC (Higher Education Recruiting Consortium) board meeting October 22.

Scott Jaschik and Doug Lederman are participating in the Compact for Faculty Diversity's Institute on Teaching and Mentoring on October 23 just across the river in Arlington, Virginia.

STAFF NEWS: Congratulations to Inside Higher Ed's long-time freelance graphic designer Stephen Egts on his new role as Director of the Graphic and Web Program at the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University's Georgetown (DC) campus. Stephen's done terrific work for Inside Higher Ed over the last several years, including creating our well-known logo.

We're also saying a sad farewell to our IT director, Will Collins, who's leaving Inside Higher Ed to become the director of Web and new media at Science Magazine. While there's some debate as to whether Will was employee number 5 or number 6 here at Inside Higher Ed, there's no doubt at all about the huge contribution he's made to our company, both in the early days and as we've grown. We're going to miss him!

FUN STUFF: This is your last chance to give us a piece of your mind by taking Inside Higher Ed's 2009 reader survey - the survey closes October 9. Click here to share your thoughts about the site.

SERVICE NOTE: At the time of year when folks are getting settled in new positions, make sure a job change doesn't interrupt your daily news from Inside Higher Ed. Drop a note to newsroom@insidehighered.com and we'll take care of switching your daily news update to your new e-mail address.

October Audio Conference
Despite recent gains in minority enrollments, many graduate programs remain overwhelmingly white. How do institutions achieve greater diversity? A growing number of experts believe that while graduate admissions efforts are important, much of the work to diversify the graduate student body must start in undergraduate programs. On Wednesday, October 21 at 2 p.m. Eastern, Inside Higher Ed will present How Undergraduate Institutions Can Diversify the Graduate Student Body, an audio conference featuring Richard Cherwitz, founder and director of the Intellectual Entrepreneurship Consortium (IE) in the Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin. Professor Cherwitz will discuss how undergraduate programs need to change to encourage more of their minority students (and more of their students generally) to consider graduate school and faculty careers. Click here to register now for this low-cost conference, or for more information.
