quint-haiku (and it’s true, too!)

Leaving the inter- view, she walked into a walland laughed about it.

Once the door had closed, neutral witnesses spoke up:"You’ll get the job now.”

I bought her a beer that night and agreed she wasquite memorable.

Next week she’ll tell me if memorable means that she will see campus

or if it just means she’s fodder for poets andfolks who sympathize.

No more interviews in Philthydelphia. There’s *always* next year.

Is it seventeen?

Or sixteen ... I can’t recall.

Hmmm ... she’s not for us.

Dumb struck, bad evening: no more interviews cheap teach—sad dreams as adjuncts.

Didn’t go this year. Much due ere January.Someone else can wait.

There I was minding my own business, deleting mail without reading

when ‘haiku’ fluttered past the spam through the highlights insinuating

itself between me and Harvard, waiting fifteen sleepless hours away.

Sometimes a girl needs to give in to distraction to keep sanity

to cast aside clocks and succumb to melody to hear the rails sigh.

, at 5:30 am EST on January 3, 2007

Three hours of life lost

listening to the intro ’spiel’

again and again.

Strong vita — but we wished

we’d been his sixth interview

not his very first.

Who’ll be the one who

asks the awkwardest question?

Hope it isn’t me!

, at 8:00 am EST on January 3, 2007

Thanks Professor Hochman

This was a lot of fun. I’ll have to say that, from my perspective, the best concluding haiku line was Pat Valdata’a “Margaritaville!” Spectacular!

In fact — and they were all terrific — I’m nominating her haiku for “the best of the best.”

P.S. On several occasions I have asked IHE to alter its formatting constraints to enable us to express poetry “more naturally.” They don’t even respond.

P.P.S. It appears that IHE has still not repaired its Comments windows.
