"Amazon has told publishers it is considering creating a digital-book library featuring older titles, people familiar with the talks said. The content would be available to customers of Amazon Prime, who currently pay the retailer $79 a year for unlimited two-day shipping and for access to a digital library of movies and TV shows." The semester has begun with a bang: an earthquake, a hurricane, and a presidential visit. Add to that the normal stresses of the beginnings of two different school years (at least my college daughter is navigating the opening of her school year on her own), a new school, and a new athletic team, and I know why I’m so tired this Monday.So, let’s try bullet points instead of finely-wrought paragraphs (not that I always achieve those, anyway!) and see if I can sum up some of what’s going on right now.

I just turned forty and began worrying about catching a terrible disease from my students.A good friend once clued me in to a self-image disease suffered by many college professors. Let’s call it the Cool Envy Disease. Every day, he said, we are surrounded by people who are impossibly cool. These people dress well. They are super fit and look great in skinny jeans and miniskirts. They know all the good bands. They are politically progressive. And they can text with one hand, under a desk, without looking.And they are twenty years old.

Thank you Tony Sanfilippo , Assistant Press Director at Penn State Press, for laying out the challenges faced by university presses so clearly in his post "Price and printruns" on 9/8/11.Can we brainstorm some solutions to the high price of University Press books together?

I am writing this blog in a hotel in Seattle. I picked the hotel because it has LEEDS certification and in this way I am supporting businesses that share my priorities. I am here to attend the Bat Mitzvah of a close family friend's daughter and I am viewing the weekend as a nice change of pace.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, I walked Ben to school as usual. On the way, also as usual, we met other kids in his class and their caregivers. Everyone was marveling at the odd, and oddly beautiful, silvery streaks in the sky. I wondered if a blimp had exploded.

I get daily newsletters from greenbiz.com. I generally scan the headlines, but often don't read the articles -- a significant portion of the cases they promote I consider to be greenwashing. On the other hand . . .
