A new correspondent writes:I am thinking of making a change in my career path. I am a non-tenure track, full time instructor, starting my 8th year in this job. While I enjoy my job and it is reasonably stable even in a terrible economy & job market, it is obviously untenable as a seriously-long-term career option. But I really like working in a University community and I want to find a way to stay in that environment.

Please, esteemed reader, bear with me. What follows is not an apology for textbook publishers: good, bad, or otherwise, students, faculty, and publishers all share various parts of the pain of the broken business model for college textbooks. Rather, what follows is an effort to explain why the business model is broken.

Twitter is an amazing communication and engagement tool. I am frequently on Twitter asking questions, sharing information, and networking with other higher education professionals. Web-based microblogging is an exceptionally powerful medium.

A student writes:I failed a class (obtained an F), and was planning to retake it based on the rules of the university. I did, and I received B. However, I was unaware that the retake policies changed (they changed after I entered the university my first semester). The retake policies changed to enable a person to drop a bad grade from a transcript and retake the class.

We are wrapping up the third summer session on campus. We have three summer sessions and we also have a very active and heavily enrolled day camp which helps utilize our facilities during a time when there are fewer students on campus. In addition to there being fewer students there are also fewer faculty, and summer classes which are typically held early in the day or in the evening tend to leave afternoons free of classes and also unfortunately free of faculty and students on campus.
