A new correspondent writes:Why are ranks at Community Colleges sometimes different from those at 4-year schools? For example, my rank is "Instructor," but I'm full-time tenure track. I only achieve the rank of "Assistant Professor" in five years, after I get tenure. The other ranks are for various levels of promotion.I know it's a minor issue, but frankly it drives me a little nuts having to explain to people that I am, in fact, TT and that I'm not a part-timer. Sometimes I just fudge and say "Assistant Professor," to avoid the confusion.

I often have two or three books going simultaneously, one or two of them "serious" and one much less so.The "less so" novel I just finished is "Soon I Will Be Invincible", by Austin Grossman. It's an original piece, but it draws heavily (and with obvious parodic intent) on material from Marvel and DC comic book universes. In fact, if you didn't grow up (and aren't growing up right now) with tales of Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Iron Man, and the X-Men, then reading the book would be a waste of your time. Grossman's considerable work and wit would be for naught.

Greetings, dear reader, and welcome to DigitalTweed. Launched in 1999 as a column in Converge Magazine, DT later appeared in Campus Technology Magazine (2003-06). Following an extended sabbatical, it returns to Inside Higher Ed, where IHE founders and editors Scott Jaschik and Doug Lederman have given me permission to wander the academic landscape. If successful, these posts will inform and entertain, and at times also annoy. A little dissonance can be a good thing.

Hurricane Katrina helped convince much of higher education that there is a tremendous need for emergency planning. And many of us developed sophisticated plans to do what we need to do if an emergency strikes — resume full operation or get as close to that as possible, and do it in the least possible time. But what has happened to those plans since then and how prepared are we?

The first student looked at me with tears in his eyes, silent for a moment, and then said, “I have to call my parents.” The next tried to argue with me, then begged, pleaded, and finally resigned himself to the news. A third student meekly accepted my words, and the fourth didn’t come to the meeting at all, perhaps predicting that it would be about something she did not want to hear.

In our never-ending quest to help students succeed, we’re taking a fresh look at how we do academic advising on campus. From asking around, it seems like there are several different schools of thought on academic advising, each pretty much talking past the others.

The Ohio State University (OSU) had been without a formal campus union since 2006. In 2010, the Ohio Union opened with much fanfare. More than 16,000 people attended the opening of the LEED certified union this past March. According to Kurt Foriska, Associate Director of the Union, social media was an integral part of the marketing of the new union. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube were used as communications platforms to create buzz about the new union.

Librarians have a love/hate relationship with Google. We are just as prone as any mortal to wonder what on earth we did without it. We use Google tools daily and show students how to use features they may not have discovered. Many of us have gmail and Google Reader accounts. Some of us are paralyzed when Google Calendar takes a nap. We aren't sure where we're supposed to be, so we are tempted to take a nap, too.
