Last week, there was a thought-provoking post over at IHE about lessons that the nonprofit sector of higher ed could learn from the for-profit sector. It’s worth checking out.Having worked in both, I mentioned in the comments that the lower-tier nonprofits, such as community colleges, would do well to learn certain lessons from the for-profits. One really basic one is the importance of addressing a certain kind of cultural capital that elite students already have, but that community college students generally don’t.

My six-year-old daughter likes to dance around the living room with a pink Barbie microphone pretending to be Sharpay from High School Musical. She leaps from one couch to another, gesturing wildly and imitating the teenage girls she watches in movies and videos. When she catches me looking at her from the other room, she imperiously orders me to leave; these personas are her private creations. I love her physical confidence, her swagger, and her joy in singing.

One of the behaviors I try to account for when I'm doing a greenhouse gas inventory for Greenback U is commuting by faculty members. Faculty commute less often than staff, and typically shorter distances -- they're more likely to be able to afford decent housing near campus. Professors who live the closest to campus tend to walk to the office, but most faculty still drive. Then, there are the others. The ones who fly.

Sometimes it seems like the first days of school go on and on. Last week was the official first day of school, but only for an hour and not for my kindergartener. She dressed up anyway to celebrate her brother’s first day. Her first "day" in the classroom was a twenty-minute parent-child meeting with the teacher. And nearly a week after everyone else started school, the kindergarteners spent two one-hour mornings in the classroom before finally attending for the full three hours.

While hurrying to class this morning among throngs of students on the quad, I heard the sickening thud of a body hitting the sidewalk and the scattering of papers. When the crowd parted I saw that an old man who looked like emeritus faculty had fallen. It took me a few seconds to get to him, in part because everyone in the area continued walking around him. He was breathing hard and was scared. I thought he might be having a heart attack or stroke, but he said he was alright, and when I asked if he could stand, he said yes. I got him on his feet, alone.

Thought I'd try an experiment of sharing with you some of the best practices I'm trying to write up about the rhythm of online teaching, in the hopes that you will provide some ideas and feedback. Ideally this would be a wiki, but we are stuck with a blog platform. While I'm writing about online teaching, I think the principles apply to on-ground and blended learning.
