I’m thrilled to announce that my first novel, long in the making, has been accepted for publication. It was late and everybody else was in bed when I read the e-mail, but I was so excited I fired up the grill after midnight and made myself hot dogs to celebrate.

We live with constant news of environmental catastrophe and possible, probable and certain extinctions, including humankind’s. Granted, the reports are sometimes contradictory. Polar bears have become the bellwether for global warming due to loss of habitat, but the news the other day said they’ll all retire south to Alaska and be fine. Maybe they’ll have a gated community.

My son Starbuck, who’s six, is home a lot this summer, so I figured we might find some time to do a little home-school unit on Twain: Read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, drive over to Springfield to the Lincoln Museum and out to Hannibal, ride a steamboat, watch some grave robbers, smoke a few pipes. That sort of thing.

As I said a few days ago, my acquaintance Crazy Larry and I went recently to Abbey Road on the River, a Beatles festival in Louisville, Kentucky. It was a trip I’d intended to make for more than a year, feeling deep down it would be a good subject to write on.
