I was heartened to see Zemsky put learning at the top of his list of the tough issues facing higher education, ahead of attainment and money. Zemsky outlines some of the typical challenges faced by colleges and universities in supporting student learning and measuring the results. He writes that, "there is a growing suspicion -- and in some quarters an already angry conviction -- that all is not well with the learning enterprise."

This one introduces itself. I am the son of a long time correspondent and a reader in my own right. I teach adjunct at three different post secondary schools (colleges and trades schools).

Updates from my daughter, now in her second week of college, come in the form of facebook status updates and text messages. We’ve talked a couple of times as well, but we’re certainly not having the daily phone conversations that some of my friends and colleagues have reported as the norm between college kids and their parents. This doesn’t really surprise me: we’re text people, in our house, vastly preferring to compose our thoughts in words on paper (pixels on screen?) before we send them out into the world.

This morning, I awoke to the voice of Steven Chu on NPR. I'll want to go back and listen to the piece again this evening -- any pronouncement to the media (national media, particularly) by any member of any Cabinet is always an exercise in political spin, and my de-spinning capacity before I've had coffee is extremely limited.

Within hours of my introductory post, I received a request from a reader who described herself as an adjunct at two institutions, a university and a community college. I gathered from her message that in both places she teaches composition courses that include a research paper. She is clearly dismayed by her colleagues’ traditionalist approach to that task (what I call the state–your–thesis–make–an–outline–annotate–your–sources–write–a–draft regimen) and by students’ uncritical rush to the Web for all things.

Two very intelligent and thoughtful responses to my previous post, on women and majors, caused me to reread the post to try to determine where my communication skills had gone off the rails. I still don’t see where I blamed women workers for anything, but one of the problems with writing is that because you know what you mean to say, you assume that that’s what you are saying. So I want to backtrack a bit before letting the topic go.
