Can two mature campuses share one President? Apparently, in a cost-cutting move, the SUNY system is considering having three of its sitting Presidents become Presidents of two colleges each. The idea is to save the salaries of three Presidents, and to make a conspicuous public statement about moving resources out of administration and into teaching.

This might seem like a strange argument to make at this time. Last week, HP killed the TouchPad, surrendering in the face of the iPad juggernaut. An 8/19 NYTimes headline reads "As PCs Wane, Companies Look to Tablets" -- for an article that looks ahead to coming tablets from Amazon and Sony.

With college in the air, I have been doing more thinking about the home vs. away question. I still think that whatever Ben wants is the best choice (assuming we can afford it, as Father of 4 pointed out in last week’s comments), but one facet of going away to school has particular resonance for me: the experience of developing intimacy through living with someone long-term.

A frustrated student writes (it’s a bit long):In a nutshell: I got a B and should have gotten an A, can you see why I'm uncomfortable going to talk to the dean about this? However, the letter grade isn't my gripe.Please forgive my ignorance, but, this is the bigger picture that I can't seem to gain a sense of reasoning on.

Last month, I was invited to a conference in Kuwait to deliver a speech. I was given very little notice. After a speedy preparation of 3-4 days I made it to the Atatürk International Airport in Istanbul. As I handed my passport to the police officer at passport control, the officer looked at my passport, smiled at me and said, “I was the one who processed your passport the last time you went abroad.” It was only about a month ago that I had been in Poland within the context of the Erasmus Programme.

This is a proposal (or a conversation starter) for Next Generation Learning Challenge (NGLC), EDUCAUSE, and the NGLC funders and partners.The NGLC is "….is a collaborative, multi-year grant program aimed at dramatically increasing college readiness and completion through applied technology.." and is partnered with EDUCAUSE and other organizations to "…disburse about $20 million over two years" (from IHE 10/11/10).
