Alfred State College Offers Outstanding Opportunities

Alfred State College, a college of technology within the State University of New York (SUNY) system, offers outstanding educational opportunities with more than 70 dynamic majors and more than 56 courses available online. Students can enroll in one of 17 bachelor degree programs, or they can choose an associate degree program from 52 other options. But one trait that sets Alfred State apart from other colleges is its learning-by-doing philosophy and hands-on education.

Classes are taught from the perspective of what employers expect on the job. Many of ASC’s faculty members have real world experience, having worked in their specific industries. An ASC education isn’t only about theory; it’s about what has worked in your chosen field and what will work for you. Of course, the College’s technology-rich programs teach students the critical thinking that will help them succeed in life and in their careers. Our faculty’s unique approach has set it apart, resulting in 43 SUNY Chancellor Award winners and 9 SUNY Distinguished Professors.

Another trait that sets Alfred State College apart from other colleges is its strong sense of community. Typically, within a few days of their arrival, ASC students feel right at home.

Much of student life takes place in the residence halls, where students meet, think, study, grow, and socialize. Living style choices include row house, block house, corridor-style, suite-style, and a new townhouse-style residential complex, complete with individual living and dining areas and fully functional kitchens.

Joining other students outside the classroom is a great way for students to fit in and to apply what they’re learning to the real world. Participating in student clubs and organizations enhances the leadership and teamwork skills students learn in the classroom. It’s also a great way to meet friends and form lasting friendships. Students can choose from more than 50 clubs and organizations.

Whether students want to participate in intercollegiate sports, intramurals, or simply stay in shape, ASC offers dozens of alternatives. The College boasts 18 intercollegiate teams and a variety of intramural sports. A state-of-the-art fitness center is located in the Orvis Activities Center. Additionally, few colleges its size can boast the number of NJCAA All-American, All-Region, and All-Conference athletes that SUNY Alfred has. Each year, a number of Alfred State Pioneers earn scholarships to continue their playing careers at other prestigious colleges as well as NFL teams and the minor leagues.

Alfred State is located in the beautiful Southern Tier of New York State, surrounded by lakes, ponds, wetlands, and state parks. It is 15 miles north of the Pennsylvania border, 70 miles south of Rochester, and 90 miles southeast of Buffalo.

Integrity. Civility. Respect. Leadership. Teamwork. At Alfred State, you have an opportunity to live out the meaning of these words when you participate in our clubs and organizations. Joining "student communities" outside the classroom is a great way to make friends, build your resumé, exercise leadership and teamwork, and cultivate the interests that make you who you are.

Caribbean Student Association (CSA) - The fundamental goal of CSA is to foster cultural awareness around Caribbean culture and topical issues. Through effective programming we seek to expose the entire Alfred community to the many assets of Caribbean life so that they too can feel a part of the Caribbean community. All members of the community, whether of Caribbean descent or not, are welcome in our organization.

International Club - Composed of students from the United States and other countries. It is one of the most active clubs on campus. You will be able to enjoy multicultural dinners or travel to cities such as Niagara Falls, Corning, New York City, or Washington, DC. The college welcomes diversity and the International Club is the group to help introduce different cultures to those around us.

Kaleidoscope Coalition - A multicultural group of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to creating meaningful experiences that provide students with new perspectives, new interactions, and a sense of belonging. This coalition strives to provide unique opportunities that educate while challenging students to open their minds and cherish new relationships in hopes of further developing their ability to relate to, work with, and serve others; provides resources to the campus community; and coordinates a calendar of events, programs, trainings, and initiatives that are intended to build awareness and encourage human growth.

Latin American Student Organization (LASO) - Exists to help identify and promote a more informative understanding of other cultures. The organization strives to support and create opportunities and improvement for personal growth, personal satisfaction, and leadership for its members. The members create relationships with other student organizations on and off campus that have a mutual purpose with this organization.

Rainbow Union - Alfred State’s gay-straight alliance, provides social opportunities and politically effective actions for members of the Alfred State gay, lesbian, and bisexual community and its supporters. Rainbow Union acts as an informative resource to assist and educate the entire Alfred State community regarding support and factual issues of the gay, lesbian, and bisexual community at large. RU sponsors many programs in conjunction with AU’s spectrum.

Ujima - Dedicated to enriching the environment in which African-American students live and learn at Alfred State. The society sponsors a variety of activities that have an academic, social, or cultural focus. It also promotes multi-cultural awareness through its programming and welcomes membership to all Alfred State students regardless of race.

WINS (Women In Non-Traditional Studies) - WINS promotes knowledge of women in male dominated fields.

Alfred State is a public, coeducational, two- and four-year, nonsectarian college of approximately 3,528 undergraduates. The college was founded in 1908 and joined the newly organized State University of New York (SUNY) system in 1948.

Alfred State is located in the beautiful Southern Tier, surrounded by lakes, ponds, wetlands, and state parks. Hike 15 minutes from campus and you arrive at the beautiful Alfred State Lake Lodge, a recreational complex where you can paddleboat, fish, swim, or camp. If you like to snowboard or downhill ski, Swain Ski Center is nearby. Alfred State is 70 miles south of Rochester and 90 miles southeast of Buffalo. We have driving directions available if you're planning to visit us.

Alfred State includes two campuses-one located in the village of Alfred, and the second located approximately 15 miles from Alfred in the village of Wellsville. Both campuses feature a high degree of wireless internet access. In fact, Intel ranked Alfred State 21st in the Nation’s Top 50 Wireless Campuses.

The 260-acre Alfred campus includes students studying in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as the School of Architecture, Management, and Engineering Technology. The campus is centered on an "academic core:" those buildings which house classrooms, labs, faculty offices, and student services. Surrounding the academic structures are 13 residence halls, including a new townhouse and an activities center.

The School of Applied Technology consists of more than 20 buildings on a 21-acre campus in Wellsville. Emphasizing the development of skills pertinent to a specific field, the School of Applied Technology offers the associate degree in occupational studies (AOS). Students live on the Alfred campus and free transportation is provided to Wellsville each day.

In addition to the two campuses, the college also includes an 800-acre college farm and a motorsports facility.

For more than a century, Alfred State has maintained civic engagement and hands-on learning as two cornerstones of our college culture. It’s who we are. And with our focus on learning by doing, we understand that our potential for impact—both economically and culturally—is vast. That’s why you’ll find so many of our students, faculty, and staff out in local communities every day, volunteering, sharing their knowledge, and seeking partnerships. Alfred State continues to expand and nurture its mutually beneficial and supportive relationships with local businesses, organizations, and government agencies because we believe the benefits of higher education shouldn’t live solely in the classroom and shouldn’t end at our gates. And we know our students can learn so much more from living and doing in the world outside than they can from sitting in a lecture.
