Colgate University

Colgate University

Colgate is a nationally recognized liberal arts college set on a beautiful campus in central New York.

Some 2,900 undergraduates are enrolled in 54 programs, taking advantage of the university's award-winning curriculumoff-campus study program, and numerous research opportunities.

Students enjoy small class sizes taught by expert faculty members -- not teaching assistants.

The university’s strategic plan offers a blueprint for turning today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders, joining the scores of alumni already playing major roles in a variety of fields. The Center for Career Services is a key player as students make this transition.

Colgate hums with activity. It is a place where the arts thrive. Student-athletes compete at the very highest level of NCAA Division I sports. There are dozens of club and intramural sports programs, and the college’s outdoor education program is second to none.

Above all, Colgate is about academic excellence. It is a tradition forged in 1819 and honed through the years by each class of select students.

It is the mission of the office to support campus diversity initiatives with the goal of increasing understanding, respect and inclusion, and to ensure compliance with policies relating to affirmative action, discrimination, and harassment.  The university’s strong commitment to equal opportunity and inclusivity is clearly articulated in the diversity mission statement found here.  The university strives to provide an environment where everyone in our community can learn about, appreciate, and celebrate our diverse cultures and gain understanding, knowledge and skills to be engaged citizens locally as well as globally.

Colgate University fully subscribes to all federal and state civil rights laws banning discrimination in private institutions of higher education. Colgate will not discriminate against any student, employee or applicant for employment because of race, color, sex, pregnancy, religion, creed, national origin (including ancestry), citizenship status, physical or mental disability, age, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran or military status (including special disabled veteran, Vietnam-era veteran, or recently separated veteran), predisposing genetic characteristics, domestic violence victim status, or any other protected category under applicable local, state or federal law, including protections for those opposing discrimination or participating in any complaint process at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or other human rights agencies. This nondiscrimination policy covers both employment and access to educational opportunities.  It is the policy of the university to provide equal opportunity in employment and not to discriminate against any individuals with disabilities who are qualified for employment in the positions for which they apply. Reasonable accommodations will be provided in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Colgate is committed to the goals of fairness and equity in all aspects of the educational enterprise, and to a learning and living environment where all members of the community feel safe and respected. Our comprehensive policy on equal opportunity, nondiscrimination, sexual harassment, and other forms of harassment and our equity grievance process ensure that any concerns brought forward by staff, faculty or students are handled promptly and equitably. Our policies and procedures aim to promote a Colgate community where all members can study, live, and work together in a community characterized by mutual respect.

Colgate is also invested in its employees’ success and values its community at all levels. Excellent benefits, wellness initiatives, and incentive programs that reward new ideas, a strong work ethic and high standards are just a few standout opportunities offered by the institution.

Colgate seeks to respond to the needs of spousal and partner employment to the extent it is able by providing informal assistance to spouses and partners who seek employment. This is the case for both current employees and prospective candidates. The Office of Equity and Diversity coordinates these employment support efforts, working with individuals to facilitate identification of employment opportunities in the area. The university is also a member of the Upstate New York HERC (Higher Education Recruitment Consortium). Developed in 2006, the Upstate New York HERC is a collaborative response of member institutions to the many challenges of academic recruitment and retention. Of particular interest to the Upstate New York HERC is finding effective ways to assist the spouses and partners of faculty and staff to secure area employment.

The village of Hamilton is approximately 10 miles from the geographic center of New York State. Hamilton is a vibrant mix of shops and restaurants located on a village green serving as a casual gathering place for the village and the university community. This beautiful home to the university was recently named by Forbes Magazine as one of the 15 friendliest towns in America. The rate of home ownership is more than 60 percent, crime rates are markedly low, and the town population shows a high level of civic engagement.

Colgate is an active member in the Partnership for Community Development, which stimulates and supports local business through small business development and the revitalization of historic buildings. Community organizations such as the Utica Refugee Center and the Mohawk Valley Latino Association, less than an hour from Hamilton, provide opportunity for multi-cultural service activities. Religious organizations in proximity to the university reflect a diversity of beliefs and ways of being. The Colgate community has access to Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist organizations.

The area is rich in the history of early campaigns for equal rights. The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum in Peterboro, a 20-minute drive from the university, was established to celebrate the Underground Railroad Heritage Trail. Peterboro is also the home of the Gerrit Smith Estate, a National Historic landmark, and designated site on the National Park Service Underground Railroad Trail. Harriet Tubman’s home, owned and operated by the AME Zion Church, is also in the central New York area.

Colgate’s bookstore, Hamilton Movie House, and Palace Theater are all located in the village. Hamilton offers an interesting and eclectic mix of restaurants and retail businesses giving a good vibe and feel of a thriving downtown. The village green hosts a number of events including a weekly three-season farmer’s market offering local organic produce, meats and cheeses as well as handmade crafts, and a summer outdoor music series. The annual Great Chocolate Train Wreck Festival is recognized as one of the best festivals in the region.

The city of Syracuse, less than an hour away, offers additional attractions and entertainment such as the Syracuse Symphony, Syracuse Stage, and Destiny USA, a six-story shopping area with over 200 stores, restaurants, and a theater complex. Area restaurants offer a wide variety of ethnic and international cuisine.

Hamilton and surrounding areas are ideal locations for biking, running, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Colgate’s golf course (designed by Robert Trent Jones) ranks among the top 25 Best Campus Golf Courses. Near the main campus lies the 85-acre Beattie Reserve with forested trails, and farther afield, Colgate maintains a camp on Upper Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks for use by students and faculty.

Cooperstown, with its famed Baseball Hall of Fame and Glimmerglass Opera, is about an hour away. Albany is one and one half hours to the east, the Finger Lakes region is two hours to the west, and New York City, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, and Philadelphia are within a four to five-hour drive.  More information about Hamilton, New York can be found here.
