Ithaca College

Ithaca College

Ithaca College is a private residential college in the scenic Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Located in one of America’s top college towns, IC boasts a lively and sophisticated residential community that takes full advantage of its stunning natural backdrop and a local community rich in arts and culture.

At Ithaca College, faculty and staff work together to make students ready for success in an evolving world. Challenging academic programs promote critical thinking and hands-on learning, and students work closely with experienced and accomplished faculty on innovative research and enlightening coursework. Ithaca’s new strategic plan, IC 20/20, positions the college to offer a truly distinct integrative learning experience.

From its founding in 1892 as the Ithaca Conservatory of Music, Ithaca College has had a distinguished history of interweaving the threads of liberal and professional education. Students are encouraged to study across disciplines at each of the college’s five schools: Business, Communications, Health Sciences and Human Performance, Humanities and Sciences, and Music.

The college is an internationally known and respected coeducational and nonsectarian institution with approximately 6,200 undergraduate and 470 graduate students, who come to Ithaca from nearly every state and over 70 countries. The curriculum provides more than 2,000 courses in over 100 programs of study. While the breadth of its curriculum is normally found only at larger universities, Ithaca holds fast to its tradition of close, personal instruction (11:1 student-faculty ratio).

Ithaca College values diversity because it enriches our community and the myriad experiences that characterize an Ithaca College education.  Diversity encompasses multiple dimensions, including but not limited to race, culture, nationality, ethnicity, religion, ideas, beliefs, geographic origin, class, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and expression, disability, and age.  We are dedicated to addressing current and past injustices and promoting excellence and equity.  Ithaca College continually strives to build an inclusive and welcoming community of individuals with diverse talents and skills from a multitude of backgrounds who are committed to civility, mutual respect, social justice, and the free and open exchange of ideas.  We commit ourselves to change, growth, and action that embrace diversity as an integral part of the educational experience and of the community we create.

Ithaca College’s vision of becoming the standard of excellence for residential comprehensive colleges by fostering students’ intellect, creativity, and character is directly related to its mission to attract a diverse body of faculty, students, and staff.  We acknowledge that recruiting, retaining, and supporting a diverse faculty, staff and student body is crucial to our sustainability as an institution of higher education. Therefore, achieving diversity at Ithaca College requires much more than the celebration of differences.  It requires members of the Ithaca College community to acknowledge:

  • That given the increasingly diverse composition of the United States and globalization of virtually every aspect of our general experience, multicultural and international understanding are fundamental to our daily interactions, well-being, and future success.
  • That some groups of people in the United States have been and continue to be under-represented and under-served in institutions of higher education, both among the students and in the highest ranks of faculty and staff.
  • Throughout the history of the United States some groups of people have been and continue to be subject to systematic discrimination due to their race, age, religion, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, economic class, and disability.

Ithaca College commits itself to addressing these current and past injustices and to building a college community which values the diversity of the local, regional, national, and global communities we serve.

Academic Affairs

The Division of Academic Affairs is primarily responsible for formal aspects of the teaching and learning experience at Ithaca College including courses, curricula, and academic programs.  We value learning opportunities that expand students' understanding of and experience with the many dimensions of diversity, learning which allows our graduates to thrive in today's increasingly diverse and interdependent global community.  In every aspect of our work, we seek to create, sustain and enhance a campus culture of mutual respect, understanding and openness, characterized by continuous learning and engagement with the rich insights and challenges offered by the study of diversity and related issues.

By incorporating diversity into every student's program of study, through ongoing efforts to attract and retain a diverse faculty and staff, and with the clear intention to support the success of all students, we honor the College's overall commitment to enhancing diversity on campus and in the curriculum.

Student Affairs

The mission of the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life is to foster the comprehensive growth of students, academic success, and community development by providing learning opportunities and experiences, as well as essential services for all members of the College community.

In order to accomplish that mission, and prepare our students to live in a diverse society and interdependent world, we offer a multitude of programs and activities to create an Ithaca College community that respects and values the many dimensions of diversity that make our campus so vibrant.  We are committed to building a culture of civility, mutual respect, and social justice, and one that values opportunities which are enhanced by our diverse backgrounds, experiences, and points of view.  The services and activities especially provided by the Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs, Residential Life and Judicial Affairs, the Chaplains, Counseling Center, and the Center for LGBT Education, Outreach, and Services help to achieve our important goals.

In addition, the College's statement on Diversity and Diversity Strategic Plan provide all of us with a foundation to enhance the diverse and inclusive living and learning community that we value and aspire to be.
