The article quotes some lawmakers and policy makers as saying they think that trend is at least partially responsible for Ohio's lukewarm financial support for higher education in recent years, but the degree-less legislators scoff at that argument.

By a substantial margin, graduate students at the University of Minnesota have voted down a plan to create a union of teaching and research assistants.Two-thirds of the 4,461 eligible graduate students at Minnesota's Twin Cities and Duluth campuses voted in the elections held last week. The union won the backing of 1,296 while 1,779 voted against it. State officials released the results Monday.

The more students are "engaged" in their academic work, the less likely they are to drink heavily or abuse drugs. But academic engagement does not seem to have any effect, positively or negatively, on students' overall mental health, although it does seem to add to the level of stress they feel.

Elementary school students perform better when their teachers have "completed the training that leads to certification," Stanford University researchers reported in a study released Friday at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association. The researchers, led by Linda Darling-Hammond, said the study was the first to examine the relative effectiveness of formal teacher education programs and those that put teachers into classrooms with less formal training, like Teach for America.
