The U.S. Education Department announced Friday that Matteo Fontana, a career employee with responsibility for overseeing lenders, has been placed on administrative leave. In addition, the department announced that Margaret Spellings, the secretary of education, has asked for the resignation of Lawrence W. Burt from the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance. Burt is director of financial aid at the University of Texas at Austin.
