An organization challenging the way the Education Department enforces Title IX has told James Madison University to either stand with them or face a lawsuit. The threat is the latest fallout from James Madison's September decision to cut 10 teams -- a move that has renewed criticism from advocates for men's athletics that Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is being used to hurt their teams.

The University of California at Berkeley has invited the professors who lead four Academic Senate  committees to  join in the contract negotiations to finalize a $500 million research pact between the energy giant  BP, the university, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, The San Francisco Chronicle reported. The move comes as two petitions circulate at Berkeley.

A group that advocates for men's sports released data Thursday that it says show that many more men's teams have been eliminated than National Collegiate Athletic Association statistics typically suggest -- cuts the group blames on colleges' trying to carry out Title IX, the law barring sex discrimination.
