Nearly a million unique visitors found something compelling to read on Inside Higher Ed last month. From the big Apple announcement to President Obama's State of the Union bombshell to still more critical analysis from the authors of Academically Adrift, big stories resulted in big readership.

The story that got the most attention last month was Scott Jaschik's reporting from the MLA on ideas for radically changing Ph.D. programs. Under discussion: ending the norm of producing a "proto-book," embracing digital formats, shaming committee members into doing work, and halving the 9-year average for doctorate completion. Allie Grasgreen's coverage of criminal charges recently filed in the case of a UCLA lab accident that resulted in the death of a research assistant was widely read and forwarded. Libby Nelson's story on President Obama's proposal to use campus-based financial aid programs to reward colleges that limit increases in net price and punish those that do not prompted a flurry of comments and sharing across social networks. And Hack (Higher) Education blogger Audrey Watters' Five Predictions for Higher Ed Technology inspired much debate.
