Foreign students studying in China will be required to take courses in Chinese language and in Chinese culture and law, the South China Morning Post reported. New regulations written by the ministries of education, foreign affairs and public security also require students majoring in philosophy and politics to take compulsory classes in political theory.
In addition, the regulations prohibit organized religious activities on campus and call for universities to bar foreign students from participating in political activities “under normal circumstances.”
China enrolled more than 442,000 foreign students last year, with the largest number coming from South Korea, followed by the United States, Thailand, Pakistan and India. The South China Morning Post notes that the new regulations regarding international students come amid a push by the Chinese Communist Party to strengthen ideological control at university campuses.
