A gunman opened fire on about 200 people outside the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library Tuesday night, injuring four students from both Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University.
The victims, 17- to 19-year-old female students, were attending a block party to celebrate the end of new student orientation around 10:30 p.m. the night before classes at both universities began Wednesday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The students’ injuries ranged from graze to gunshot wounds, and Atlanta police reported that they were not the gunman’s intended targets -- an argument had broken out between two separate parties before the shooting.
In an update about the shooting on Wednesday, Darryl B. Holloman, Spelman's vice president of student affairs, wrote that the two victims who are Spelman students "sustained non-life-threatening wounds and have been moved to a regular [hospital] floor for observation." The two Clark Atlanta students also sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to a release from Interim President Lucille H. Maugé.
"There is no reason to believe that this incident represents an ongoing threat to any individual or the community at large," Holloman wrote.
Spelman faculty were told not to expect full attendance in their classes Wednesday, and counselors were made available Tuesday night to support students, the Journal-Constitution reported. Clark Atlanta will hold a prayer service today for the students impacted by the shooting.
