Jerry Falwell Jr., Liberty University's president, told The Hill and other news outlets on Tuesday that he is asking the Federal Bureau of Investigation to probe what he said is a "criminal" campaign and "attempted coup" waged by former university board members and employees against him.
"Our attorneys have determined that this small group of former board members and employees, they're involved in a criminal conspiracy, are working together to steal Liberty property in the form of emails and provided them to reporters," Falwell Jr. told The Hill.
Falwell and the university have been the subject of several recent news reports accusing him of business deals involving Liberty that benefited his family and friends.
An article Politico Magazine published earlier this week alleged that Falwell presides over a culture of self-dealing at the university. The article included emails and comments from more than two-dozen unnamed current and former Liberty employees. Falwell told the Associated Press that the emails were stolen from the university, and he called on the FBI to investigate the alleged theft. A cybercrime expert told the AP it would be difficult for Falwell to make a case that the emails were shared illegally.
Falwell was an early, vocal supporter of President Trump, a public stance he has maintained.
