Lots of discussion going around IHE today about online learning. Steve Kolowich kicked off a discussion about one academic's attempt to add "the human element" to the LMS by integrating Skype and Elluminate Live with Moodle. Dean Dad connected his lousy experience with webinars to online courses by asking, "have you learned anything from the earthly purgatory of webinars that helped you improve an online class?" The comments to these two stories were both great.

I miss The Industry Standard. Were you a subscriber / reader of this print magazine? The Standard lasted from around 1998 to 2001 - both a participant and chronicler of the dot-com bubble. Essential reading during those jubilant (inflation), bizarre (peak), and traumatic (deflation) bubble days.

What would an Learning Management System (LMS) look like that was boiled down to its essential functions and features? Why would we want a minimalist LMS? Who could provide such a minimalist LMS?

When it comes to effective teaching, good learning design trumps advanced technology every time. Our energy and resources are best spent in partnering with faculty to insure that their courses are designed with solid learning design fundamentals. These fundamentals include: a) Courses broken up into units, with units usually (but not always) covering a week of course materials.

NPR is kicking our ass. Technology wise. Should it bother me that a bunch of elitist, left-wing, fair-trading, latte sipping, radio bloviating NPRians have figured out how to leverage the power of social media while us geniuses in higher ed remains stuck somewhere between the 21st and 11th centuries?

The iPad is set to illuminate the limits of the browser based LMS. The user experience through iPad optimized Apps is going to be far superior than the browser experience.
