I’m Phil Dolly, Ed. D. Recently resigned, or deposed, community college president. Yesterday I was the CEO at North East Central Community College here in Folsom County, West Dakota. Today, I’m contemplating my own crisis in leadership. Following a faculty vote of no confidence, and caving in to growing board pressure, I packed it in this morning. No one was surprised, really, including me. But more about that later.

We reached the island on the morning of Labor Day, as the last of the vacationers were closing up their summer rentals; they caught the afternoon ferry back to New Bedford. At peak times, there may be 300 people on Cuttyhunk. It is a tiny island with a peculiar shape, located about two hours from Boston -- one hour each by land and by sea. A retired academic couple, Marvin and Betty Mandell, had lent my wife and me use of their place for a few days.

Like many professors, I have a policy about cell phones in my classroom. I struggle with this policy every semester, trying to prevent their usage from disrupting my class (trying to prevent their usage at all, in fact), but also recognizing that draconian measures might not have the best effect on classroom atmosphere.
