College Possible, an organization that connects high school and college students from low-income backgrounds with near-peer coaches (AmeriCorps members) has acquired the Seattle-based organization College Access Now.

The idea behind College Possible is that many low-income students need help to understand the college application process. College Access Now has similar principles.

The acquisition brings to seven College Possible's regional sites. The Seattle-based organization will now be known as College Possible.

Nationwide, College Possible students earn admission to college at more than twice the rate of their peers and are four times more likely to earn a degree.

Guadalupe Torres, who has served as executive director of College Access Now, will continue in that role at College Possible Washington.

In a statement, she said: "Despite Seattle's thriving economy, there is a growing population of underrepresented students who need support. As a daughter of an immigrant from a farm-working family and a first-generation college graduate -- I know the challenges. I am honored to lead an organization that promotes the opportunity for students to reach their full potential and creates a talent pipeline that is reflective of the rich diversity of our local communities."
