It happens far too often. There are so many open tabs in Chrome that I can barely see the favicons all in a row at the top of my screen. Pondering a solution to this issue, an epiphany of sorts took place while walking outside (59 degrees in Boston, really?!) -- why not share some of the stories and items that I'm reading? A graduate student recently shared his frustrations with me about "information curation overload." Perhaps this new series, "Tales from the Tabs," will be a pseudo Summify...I'd call it "Quick Takes," but that would be rather awkward. Without further adieu, here are some of the various bits of info from my Chrome tabs that I've curated into a cohesive melange of bullet points:
- Inigral Launches iPhone and Mobile Versions of Schools App - Mobile access is becoming ubiquitous so it makes perfect sense that Inigral would launch a mobile version of their Facebook app. A mobile web version will have to satisfy Android users for now, but my guess is that a Droid-ready version is in the works. The "Meet Ups" functionality is intriguing as that type of connection-making has always been promising in scope, but less than successful from a practical in-person perspective.
- Leveraging LinkedIn to Reach Adult Prospects - When I first heard about this webinar from Academic Impressions*, I wished that i had thought of it first. Using LinkedIn strategically to reach prospective students says a lot about the utility and maturity of LinkedIn as something more than just an online resume. (*full disclosure, I'm currently working on two webinars with Academic Impressions.)
- ACPA's Credentialing Implementation Program blog - The student affairs credentialing conversation continues. And, with comments enabled, practitioners are encouraged to share their thoughts.
- Career Centers...and Pinterest - The University of St. Thomas Career Development Center is definitely experimenting with the cutting edge. Tweeting out a link to a YouTube video on Pinterest...from a student affairs unit? That's a new one! Their .edu homepage lists a wide variety of social channels...I just wish that they weren't located at the bottom left. However, their social media directory is quite impressive!
- 3 Easy ways to find your way around campus using foursquare! - Foursquare + higher education, definitely potential, but the geo social sphere is still trying to figure out mainstream campus utility.
- 2011 State of Higher Ed Facebook Pages - BlueFuego brings the heat with their annual Facebook stats bonanza. All sorts of great takeaways can be found in their latest offering. Note that 14.8 wall posts per month is still the magic number for maintaining consistent engagement.
- Telling Our Story Marketing and Student Affairs - "Marketing as a core competency in student affairs"...I'm listening. It's unconventional and I like it!
- Brock University Social Media - A terrific collection of social media resources, strategy, tips, and guidelines.
- Public College, Private Dorm - "This (campus housing) is not the university’s core business." Now that is a powerful statement!
- Where are the Radical (Student Affairs) Practitioners? - With 60 comments, this was easily the most discussed/controversial post that I've written. This conversation is far from over.
