An investigation by ABC News found that security is minimal at many nuclear reactors on college campuses. The report found guard booths that were not staffed and unlocked doors to key areas, among other security problems. Some colleges, meanwhile, are criticizing the way student interns were used to report the story, saying that students were encouraged to lie, the Associated Press reported. ABC officials denied encouraging anyone to lie.
A tenured faculty member at Delaware State University has been fired amid an investigation that grades were improperly changed for at least 40 students, some of them athletes, WMDT News reported.
A second trustee has quit the board of American University, The Washington Post reported. Paul M. Wolff said that he could not support the negotiations going on between the board and Benjamin Ladner, who was fired on Monday but whom some trustees want to give a generous exit package.
The National Center for Education Statistics has published "Digest of Education Statistics, 2004," a compendium of data, most of which has been previously released, on many aspects of the American education system. The report contains statistics, among other things, on enrollments, the composition of the college faculty and degrees awarded by different types of higher education institutions.
