An administrator who was fired by Greenville Technical College after calling some Katrina refugees "yard apes" is suing to get her job back, the Associated Press reported. Renee Holcombe was associate vice president for student affairs when she made the comment. According to the AP, her suit says that the comment was intended as an affectionate reference to children, not as a racial slur.
The University of Notre Dame has announced that it is selling WNDU-TV, a local television station in South Bend, Ind., to Gray Television, Inc., for $85 million. Most of the money will go to the university's endowment.
In the latest in a series of similar appeals court rulings, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled Monday that two hearing-impaired students at Louisiana Tech University have the right to sue the university for bias against people with disabilities. A lower court had found that the university, as a state institution, was immune from such a suit, but the appeals court reversed, citing the university's acceptance of federal funds. The ruling did not concern the merits of the case -- in which the parties differ on whether Louisiana Tech provided sufficient services for the students.
