Tropical Storm Hermine led many colleges around Tallahassee, Fla., and coastal parts of Georgia and South Carolina to close Friday, and some will remain closed today. Damage was not as severe as some feared it would be, but widespread power outages left many campuses and those living off campus without power. Florida State University, one of the larger institutions in the path of the storm, arranged for food distribution to students. When power was restored to one arena, the university brought in students via buses so they could enjoy air-conditioning and recharge their phones. More than 50 power strips were set up for the latter need.
