College hockey programs are deeply divided over a proposed National Collegiate Athletic Association rule that would lower to 20 the maximum age of incoming freshman players, The New York Times reports. The average age of college hockey players has risen to 21 years, 9 months, as some of the less-visible colleges that play the sport have increasingly recruited players who have already spent a few years playing junior professional hockey, as currently allowed under NCAA rules. The rule change is being promoted by the Big Ten Conference, the Times reports, prompting the coach at College of the Holy Cross to say, “I think this is a reaction by schools that are used to winning …. They want to have their cake and eat it, too.”
