Police in Princeton, N.J., have released dash-cam footage showing the arrest arrest of a black Princeton University professor, who has said via social media that the arrest was unjust and she was mistreated by police.
Below is an edited version of the video that has been condensed from its full 37 minutes down about a minute and a half.
It shows an officer informing Imani Perry, an African-American history professor at Princeton who police say was pulled over for speeding, that her license had been suspended, that there was a warrant for her arrest from a parking violation, that they would have to handcuff her due to department policy and that she would have to wait until reaching the station to make any calls.
In a Facebook post Feb. 8, Perry wrote, “The police treated me inappropriately and disproportionately …. The fact of my blackness is not incidental to this matter.”
Christopher Eisgruber, president of Princeton, released a statement the following day which reads in part, “Many on our campus and around the country have expressed understandable concern about the arrest this past weekend of Professor Imani Perry, who is a respected scholar and beloved teacher at this university. They have been shocked that such an arrest could result from unpaid parking tickets …. I share these concerns. My colleagues and I in the university administration were in touch with Professor Perry as soon as we learned of the incident and we contacted town officials about our concerns over the weekend. The town officials responded rapidly and initiated an investigation that they have assured us will be thorough and fair. We welcome an investigation not only of the treatment of Professor Perry, but of the underlying policies, practices and protocols that were applied.”
