Hampton University lost its men's lacrosse game Saturday (20-3 to Roberts Wesleyan College). But Hampton also became the first historically black college to field a Division I men's lacrosse team, and the first black college to field a men's lacrosse team in any division since Morgan State University abandoned a Division II team 35 years ago. The Washington Post explores how the team was born, the result in large part of the work of the mother of a Hampton student who died of cardiac arrest while attending the university. The article notes that while lacrosse has gained players and fans at the college level, the sport is overwhelmingly white. All of Hampton's players are African-American.
