Union College has for years tried to downplay its Schenectady, N.Y. location, even going so far as to give visiting prospective students and their families indirect routes to campus so that they wouldn't see much of the city, known as an example of urban decay, The New York Times reported. But as the city is enjoying a revival -- assisted in some ways by the college -- Union is starting to talk about its locale and even to encourage students and others to visit the city. Data suggest that the city continues to discourage enrollment at the college, but Union officials believe that there have been real improvements such that they need to fight an out-of-date reputation, rather than fear any exposure to the city.
