In February 2008, a gunman killed five students at Northern Illinois University before shooting and killing himself.

Two of those killed in a workplace shooting in Aurora, Ill., Friday had ties to Northern Illinois. One was Trevor Wehner, a student who was on the first day of an internship. The other was Clay Parks, who graduated in 2014.

"Loss like this is devastating and senseless," said a statement from the university's president, Lisa Freeman.
